What Makes Mario Such A Timeless Classic?

Friday, 4 October, 2013

Since the first Mario game was released, almost 26 years ago, it has been nothing but a revelation to video gamers around the world. Although for the present generation the older Mario game may seem like nothing more than just another 8 – bit video game, at its time it truly was an icon and still stays so for those who had the opportunity to play it. It set the standards for how video games should be and was the first game that invoked the interest of people in video games. So what really makes Mario such a timeless classic, what is the reason behind its enormous success? Well, let’s find out.

The thing that most people wouldn’t have realized probably at that time is the simplicity that the game provided despite its excellent graphics and game play. Unlike other exceptionally complicated games where you had to remember a myriad of combination moves to get through. Mario presented the user just a few simple motions to follow. All you had to do was to pick up the controller, move forward jumping on enemies and random targets and explore the world with seemingly apparent markers. And the subtle variations in the game levels without too much difficulty imposed on you, made it much easier to adapt to as well.

This apparent simplicity is what that made the game a favorite for all age groups. But there is more. The game introduced what the concept behind video games should be. While most games, in its time let players throw magical fireballs and play poker games, which are either impossible to do in the real world or too boring, Mario enabled players to do things that are forbidden in real world on their television screens and this makes it very popular game.

Honestly, didn’t it make you feel good smashing all those bricks, jumping and crushing your enemies, pushing baddies into hot scorching lava? Truly this is what made the Mario an instant hit. And this trademark characteristic is what is being followed by games even till today, such as GTA.

And final the game’s replay ability and the sequence which it follows also contributed to the game’s entry into the video game hall of fame. Since the game had so many levels and all of them seemed to follow the same backdrop, nobody really cared to remember the levels. So no matter how many times one plays it, it always felt like new. Now, that’s something that almost all of the games, both past and present, miss out on. Truly all these factors have made Mario a timeless classic.

Luck Is On My Side!

Wednesday, 23 May, 2012

My morning started well thus keeping the good vibes all-day through. It was a busy and tiring day, but worthwhile and fulfilling at the same time.

My boyfriend accompanied me to the Phil Post EMS to claim my package from Firmoo yesterday. Last time we went there, we missed out! But this time, everything went well. No long queues, no under the table whatever, etc. Quick and smooth transaction! As in! I was so happy about it.

After that, we headed to S.R. Thai Cuisine near UST for lunch. We had eggs and fried rice for breakfast then French fries and Honey Banana float from McDo as quick snack. We just felt like eating and rewarding ourselves that day.

My boyfriend had the usual Chicken with Basil Leaves while I tried Chili Pork Rice for a change. Love the good food! While we’re eating, he texted his MTG friend because were planning to pickup some cards later the day. So we went home right after lunch, prepped up and went to Eton Cyberpod, Ortigas. Another round of LRT/MRT!

There was an ongoing tournament at Regran so we have to wait until they finished the third round before approaching his friend. Deal closed and we’re good to go. But I tried my luck and bought one Avacyn Restore booster pack… and I got….

Tamiyo, the Moon Sage

Yup, Tamiyo, the Moon Sage! That’s the only pack I bought so I know I was just too lucky! Haha. My boyfriend bought one as well and got a not so impressive rare.

After wrapping things up at Regran, we headed to Rei’s place for VTM (Vampire The Masquerade) session. My luck continued as I kept getting success die rolls. Playing VTM is really fun and exciting. I liked how the story went and we might resume the game next time.

Whew! Such a loooong tiring day! But everything turned out good so that’s something to be thankful about!

It’s Play Time!

Gotta play MTG (Magic the Gathering) again! My boyfriend is still working on our decks and I’m still unsure of what I really like to play. Haha. I’m torn between UW Delver and RG Aggro. The last time I playtested Delver, it wouldn’t synchronize with me. So hard to get a good hand even if I shuffled it to the best way I can. Plus, it was taking me too long to think of my moves and responses. Thanks to Snapcaster Mage and plenty of Instant and Sorcery for giving me lots of options and sometimes, headache!

MTG Cards - Snapcaster Mage

As for RG Aggro, we still need lots of cards to complete the deck. Even if we convert his Kessig Ramp into RG Aggro, we still have to spend more on 3 Sword of War and Peace. And as far as I know, it costs P1500 right now. I wonder if there are still people selling it for P1000-P1200 especially that the MTG Grand Prix is fast-approaching.

Based on our latest playtest, it seems that I’m getting acquainted and synched with my new deck – UW Delver. So I might use it if we won’t be able to complete RG Aggro in time.

Playing MTG is super fun!

P.S. I’ve been collecting Angel cards since the release of Avacyn Restored. Cute Angel
